The new classroom at Kilidu, built by villagers with some financial support from Mtwaralinks, is transforming young people’s lives. Until now no child from the village has received an education. The nearest government school is over 5 miles away and in the rainy season the track is almost impassable. The opening of a classroom, staffed by teachers from the Mtwara Teachers College is now offering primary education to 120 pupils in four classes – Standards I-IV. The one classroom is shared by these classes in the mornings and afternoons. By Standard IV most children are reading and writing.
It would be great if the government would register the collection of houses formally as a village and this would then commit authorities to the building staffing and resourcing of a government school but in the meantime, this classroom is all they have,
